WebP to GIF: what this tool does

Convert a WebP image when a destination accepts GIF but not WebP. Static images produce a single-frame GIF; animated WebP files retain their sequence and timing. The tool separates animation frames before drawing and encoding them, rather than asking Canvas to capture whichever frame happens to be visible.

How to use WebP to GIF

  1. Choose a static or animated WebP file.
  2. Inspect the detected frame count, choose output size and set a color budget.
  3. Generate the GIF and compare its preview and file size before sharing.

Quality, timing and file size

WebP can represent colors and partial transparency that GIF cannot. GIF output uses at most 256 palette colors per frame and one-bit transparency, so gradients and soft edges can change. Animated WebP is often more efficient than GIF; converting may increase file size. Use this conversion for compatibility, not as a guarantee of compression.

Processing happens in a browser worker, and your files are not uploaded. Start with a short animation on mobile. The tool checks file size, frame count and decoded pixels before editing; large or damaged files receive an error with a way to retry. You can cancel a running export and keep your source selection. The preview is an editing aid; download and inspect the result in its final destination because players can handle very short frame delays differently.

Frequently asked questions

Does animated WebP stay animated?

Yes. Animated WebP frame rectangles, durations, blending and disposal are decoded and composited before GIF encoding.

Why is the GIF larger?

GIF uses a different compression method and a limited palette. A smaller width or color count can help, but the resulting file is not guaranteed to be smaller.

Will transparent edges look identical?

Not always. GIF supports fully transparent or opaque pixels rather than the full alpha range available in WebP. Soft edges can look harder.

Can I use this on my phone?

Yes, in a current browser with local canvas and worker support. Mobile budgets are lower to protect memory. Choose shorter, smaller animations, and use a desktop for a larger sequence.

Does this tool upload my files?

No. Image decoding and export run on your device. This website uses analytics for page visits and tool events, but filenames, source pixels and generated frames are not sent as analytics events.
