PNG to GIF: what this tool does
Convert a single PNG to a static GIF, or choose several PNG files to create an animation. This is useful when a destination specifically requires GIF or when a sequence of interface screenshots needs to play as one file. Frame order, canvas size and timing are controlled before export.
How to use PNG to GIF
- Select one or more still PNG files.
- Arrange their order, choose dimensions and set the delay between frames.
- Check the preview and export the GIF to a separate download.
Quality, timing and file size
PNG-to-GIF conversion is not lossless for a source with many colors or soft transparency. A GIF frame has at most 256 colors and supports only fully transparent or opaque pixels. Retain your PNG originals for editing. APNG input is intentionally rejected here rather than treated as a single still frame.
Processing happens in a browser worker, and your files are not uploaded. Start with a short animation on mobile. The tool checks file size, frame count and decoded pixels before editing; large or damaged files receive an error with a way to retry. You can cancel a running export and keep your source selection. The preview is an editing aid; download and inspect the result in its final destination because players can handle very short frame delays differently.
Frequently asked questions
Can one PNG become a GIF?
Yes. One input creates a single-frame GIF. Several PNGs create an animated sequence using your chosen frame duration.
Why do smooth transparent edges change?
PNG supports partial alpha values. GIF can store only transparent or opaque pixels, so semi-transparent edge pixels must be quantized.
Is animated PNG supported?
No. This page is for still PNG inputs. It detects APNG animation data and asks for still images instead of silently losing frames.
Can I use this on my phone?
Yes, in a current browser with local canvas and worker support. Mobile budgets are lower to protect memory. Choose shorter, smaller animations, and use a desktop for a larger sequence.
Does this tool upload my files?
No. Image decoding and export run on your device. This website uses analytics for page visits and tool events, but filenames, source pixels and generated frames are not sent as analytics events.
